A core activity of the Institute is publishing materials that will improve understanding of the Maryland Campaign.
The Antietam Institute has a publishing arm to expand the range of information available about the 1862 Maryland Campaign.
Published works include the biannual Antietam Journal and individual books, including Brigades of Antietam, The Artillery of Antietam, and From Frederick to Sharpsburg.
In addition to print works, the Institute has also produced digital maps of the Battle of Antietam for use on smart phones and other devices.

The Antietam Journal: Perspectives on the 1862 Maryland Campaign features the latest scholarly research, interpretation, and stories of the Maryland Campaign. All proceeds directly support the Institute’s educational mission.

Digital Maps
In 2023 Institute Board Member and cartographer Aaron Holley produced the Antietam Base Map – the 1862 Antietam battlefield landscape in three dimensions, incorporating the latest data from sources like satellites and aircraft, historical features from period maps, and input from expert historians.
In June 2025 the Antietam Institute published the downloadable Carman-Cope Antietam Battlefield Map Set for use on a smart phone or other device. This set of 14 digital maps combines the military unit positions and movements found in the gold-standard reference, the Atlas of the Battlefield of Antietam (1908), with the modern topography of the GPS-enabled Base Map.
