Print publications

The mission of Antietam Institute Publishing is to expand the range of information available to the public about the 1862 Maryland Campaign. Published works include the biannual Antietam Journal along with individual books, such as Brigades of Antietam, Artillery of Antietam, and From Frederick to Sharpsburg.

In addition to print works, the Institute has also produced digital maps of the Battle of Antietam for use on smart phones and other devices and continues to produce short and long-form videos.

The Antietam Journal

The Antietam Journal: Perspectives on the 1862 Maryland Campaign features the latest scholarly research, interpretation, and stories of the Maryland Campaign. The Journal is provided to all current members as a benefit of membership (Corporal level and above) and all proceeds directly support the Institute’s educational mission.

The books

Each year the Antietam Institute publishes a full-length book as a member incentive and occasionally other printed works of scholarship on the Campaign.

The 2025 publication was Armies of Antietam: the Order of Battle of the Maryland Campaign, available now.

The book is a comprehensive look at the organization of both armies during the Maryland Campaign of September 1862. This works focuses on each regiment of the Federal and Confederate armies as well as biographical information on the regimental commandersmore >>

Two other works are due out in 2026:

First is the companion to Jim Rosebrock’s Artillery of Antietam: The Artillery Atlas of Antietam with maps by Aaron Holley.

The Artillery Atlas of Antietam explores the contribution of the artillery in the Maryland Campaign and presents new insights through the lens of topography, geography, and the words of those who made history. 

Also scheduled for release in 2026 is an edition of Jacob Duyee’s papers and history manuscript, including his account of his regiment – the 2nd Maryland Infantry – in action at the Burnside Bridge at Antietam. The volume is edited and annotated by Michael Hill

Biographies of both armies’ high command during the Maryland Campaign of September 1862 from the brigade level up to the army commanders, Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan

From Frederick to Sharpsburg (2023)

Thoughtful essays about people from Barbara Fritchie to Jesse Reno and Robert E Lee, encompassing places from Frederick to Sugarloaf Mountain, and farmer Daniel Wise’s famous well

Roads to Antietam (2023)

A new edition of John Schildt’s classic narrative of the two armies’ march through Maryland and the impact on the communities they passed through

Artillery of Antietam (2022)

A comprehensive overview of every artillery unit in both armies—artillery which played an important role in the many engagements of the campaign, especially at Antietam. One artillerist called the fighting on September 17, simply, ‘Artillery Hell’ 

Brigades of Antietam (2021)

Using the words of enlisted men and officers who were there, this book weaves a fascinating narrative of the role played by each of the 112 brigades through the Campaign
