Shepherd University Student Brogan Nichols Awarded Prestigious Antietam Institute Scholarship

Shepherd University student Brogan Nichols has been named a recipient of the prestigious Antietam Institute Scholarship, recognizing outstanding academic achievement and a dedicated commitment to the study of American history.

Nichols, a native of Jefferson County, West Virginia, is currently pursuing a dual major in History and Political Science at Shepherd University. A passionate scholar of the region’s rich historical landscape, Nichols focuses his academic research primarily on the American Civil War and early American settlement.

The Antietam Institute Scholarship is awarded to exceptional students who demonstrate a deep engagement with the history of the 1862 Maryland Campaign and the broader Civil War era. Nichols’ academic excellence and regional ties make him a fitting recipient of this honor.

“Receiving this scholarship from the Antietam Institute is an incredible honor,” Nichols said. “Growing up and studying in this historic region has fueled my passion for understanding our nation’s past, and this support will be invaluable as I prepare for the next step in my academic career.“

Following his upcoming graduation from Shepherd University, Nichols plans to further his education by attending either graduate school for history or law school.

When not in the classroom or conducting research, Nichols is an active outdoorsman who enjoys hiking, fishing, and kayaking throughout Harpers Ferry and the Jefferson County area. He is also an avid reader and passionate cook.

The Antietam Institute is dedicated to the education, research, and preservation of the Antietam Campaign and the Maryland Campaign of 1862. Through its scholarship program, the Institute seeks to foster the next generation of historians and scholars.
