“A.P. Hill Comes Up”: the 2025-2026 Battlefield Restoration Campaign

The Antietam Institute asks for your help to fund an important new Antietam preservation and restoration project undertaken by the American Battlefield Trust (ABT) and Save Historic Antietam Foundation (SHAF).

The ABT is in the process of purchasing two residential lots and houses near the intersection of Millers Sawmill and Harpers Ferry Roads on and adjacent to the Antietam National Battlefield Park just south of Sharpsburg, MD.

Here’s an aerial view of the properties in question:

SHAF plans to remove the non-historical house from property #1 and return the ground to its 1862 appearance. Helping SHAF pay for that work is the purpose of this Antietam Institute fundraising campaign.

Long term, the ABT plans to also restore property #2 to its wartime condition.

The Significance of the Ground

At about 4:00 PM on September 17, 1862, the 7th Virginia Infantry and Richardson’s Battery, Washington Artillery held the line along the Harpers Ferry Road. Confederate Major General A.P. Hill’s Light Division arrived after a day-long march from Harpers Ferry and deployed for action in this area against Federal troops above the lower bridge over Antietam Creek.

Won’t you help restore this important part of the historic Antietam battlefield?
